Unsubscribe from the Body Project

I’ve been thinking a lot about my relationship with my body lately—how much of my life I’ve spent trying to change it, fix it, perfect it, or make it more “acceptable.” I know I’m not alone in this because most other women I talk to have been doing the same thing.

We live in a world that conditions us to see our bodies as problems to solve rather than homes to live in. Real bodies—the ones that haven’t been filtered, altered, or cosmetically refined—are rarely celebrated, or even seen. And that’s a problem.

Because when we don’t see real bodies, we start believing our own bodies aren’t enough. And that belief fuels entire industries. The beauty industry alone is worth $123 billion in North America. The diet industry? $75 billion. That’s nearly $200 billion spent convincing us that we need to shrink, smooth, or sculpt ourselves into something “better.”

But what if we Unsubscribed from that idea?

What if we stopped treating our bodies as lifelong projects and started reclaiming our time, money, and energy? Imagine what else we could build, fund, enjoy and create with those resources. Imagine what it would feel like to simply be in our real bodies—with appreciation instead of critique.

I’m not there yet, but I’m working on it. And on the days when I can just live in this body and appreciate it exactly as it is, it’s pretty damn cool.

Real bodies exist. They are enough. They are amazing. Yours and mine.

Love you,
